Hi Jasmine, welcome to wav.world! We’re really happy to have you on board for the second edition of the Spotlight series. You’re no stranger to the curatorial sphere as you run your own platform and event series - could you tell us a bit about the history of kinetic and what motivated you to start both the mix & interview series and parties?
Thanks for having me ! Yes of course, so kinetic started as a mix platform about a year and a half ago. The idea came from a desire to shine more of a spotlight on friends & other artists without a massive platform who were often overlooked for other podcasts / gigs. I wanted to create a platform which is less about an artist's profile & more about their creativity. Some of my favourite mixes on the series so far have been from artists I hadn’t even discovered before they sent over their submission, and I find that really beautiful. I’ve also had a lot of promoters / artists reach out to me saying they discovered an artist via mixes on the series & proceeded to book them - which is a big big part of why I wanted to do this in the first place :)
As for events, curating & throwing parties has been a big passion of mine for a long time before kinetic was born, so it was a fairly natural progression into this. I guess the biggest hurdle for this was having the confidence to do it all on my own. The events follow quite a specific structure, booking a very special headliner, a local support & then always giving a slot to someone from the kinetic family / mix series who doesn’t always get the opportunities. I think it’s really important to not just book your friends / the same artists for supporting slots, there are so many incredible local artists who deserve the opportunity and I want to give as many of these as possible.
Kinetic’s next evolution will be in the form of the record label - what can you tell us about this? What can we expect from the label arm?
Yes our first release is coming some time this autumn, from an incredibly talented UK artist based in the Netherlands called 5RVZ. With the label I hope to follow a really similar structure to the events & mix series & giving the opportunity for artists who don’t necessarily have that platform yet to release their music.
It’s an incredibly special record & i’m so excited for everyone to hear it.
How does kinetic fit into your wider artistic narrative as Dj wiggles?
So the concept behind the mix series side of kinetic is that the artists create a piece of work with a specific theme in mind, with this I hope that artists feel as though they have freedom to be as creative as possible & perhaps branch out of the realms of what they feel a set or mix should be.
I guess this is very much how I approach my own artist narrative. Loving so many different styles & genres of music has meant that its taken a long time for me to figure out what my style is & I guess most importantly how to mix them all together. I’ve always themed my sets in my head and I think once there’s an understanding of the energy i’m trying to create the genres don’t seem to matter so much. I think I’m finally getting there & hopefully that’s something you can hear for yourself in this mix.
What’s been your latest music discovery that you’re obsessed with?
Been getting very lost digging on https://cosine.club/ recently, a new AI music search generator created by hurfyd. I love that it has a similarity meter which is based more on the components & energy levels of the tracks rather than genres.
Could you sum up the mix you’ve created for us in 3 words?
Sultry, cathartic & explorative
And to end with a recommendation - what’s one book/film/mix that you’ve recently consumed that you think everyone should check out?
I watched Poor Things last night for the first time & really enjoyed it. The cinematography, storyline & score by Jerskin Fendrix are all v cool.
